Do phthalates cause obesity?

An article published on 23rd April in the Daily Mail claimed that phthalates in fake tan make people fat by disrupting the hormone balance.

Anthony Dayan, Emeritus Professor of Toxicology at the University of London, explained the current status of research in this area:

“Studies in humans have found a weak link between phthalates in the body and obesity, speculating that phthalates affect cell metabolism. However, for cells to be affected, higher concentrations of phthalates would be needed than the levels that people are exposed to by fake tans and other every day products. The direct problems of overeating unsuitable foods and lack of exercise are far more important in tackling obesity.”
