Does a viral gene found in GM food raise safety concerns?

On the 21st January 2013 the Daily Mail published an article claiming new research had found a 'poisonous gene' present in many GM foods that had previously been missed by regulators. They claimed this brought into question the safety of approved GM foods. The authors of the study did not agree with this interpretation of their work and responded in our For the Record.
