GM research is key to sustaining food security in the years to come. Ignore it at our peril!

Insecticides or a repellant produced naturally by other plants? This is surely a no-brainer. Please let these people complete their research.

In my younger years I worked on the development of insect-resistant cotton in Tanzania, using the crude genetic tools available at that time. Modern genetic techniques made it possible to provide farmers with insect-resistant cotton varieties in the mid-1990s. The global uptake of these new varieties, mainly by small-scale farmers who recognise their benefits, has been remarkably swift. There is no way I would wish to see any kind of brake put on such work. I would regard any deliberate physical action that threatened the work at Rothamsted as a criminal act of vandalism for which the perpetrators should be punished. The demonstrators have lost the arguments globally and must be prevented from venting their frustration in a way that threatens the legitimate work of others.
